Stonehenge - Travel England
Sitting in a field in Wiltshire County is the prehistoric monument called Stonehenge. It is thought that this circular banked enclosure of stones may be over 5,000 years old. Scholars continue to debate how it was made and why. The people who built it did not leave behind a written language that would reveal the answers. It is known at least that it was used as a burial ground based on archaeological finds and possibly a ceremonial worship site. In more modern times this and similar monuments throughout the United Kingdom were used by Druids for ceremonial purposes. Due to erosion and conservation concerns visitors can no longer touch these ancient stones but over a million people a year still come to look and marvel at Stonehenge.
