National Railroad Museum - York

The British Railway system is the oldest one in the world. It was developed during the mid-19th century with dozens of carriers pushing out into the countryside and corners of the country. By 1923 there were four main lines that became British Railways. A short walk from the railway station in York is the National Railway Museum housed in the former York Depot since 1975.

This award winning Museum is part of the British National Museum of Science & Industry. Here one finds all things pertaining to railroads from 100 locomotives, artifacts, written and pictorial histories. etc. It is the largest collection of this nature in England. Admission is free.
